Difference Between Religion & Spirituality
Religion is usually a specific set of organized beliefs/practices generally shared by a group or community. Whereas, Spirituality is more personal. It carries more impact, peace, joy, fulfillment, and purpose to the individual.
Examples Of Starting A Spiritual Journey
First Example:
A single mother and toddler perched on a park bench. Approaching them, I said, “lovely day .”She quickly replied, “Yes, beautiful – Do you know where the nearest play-groups are around here as I’ve just moved into the area”? I replied, “Yes, I’m heading that way .”They followed, and we chatted until she arrived at the building.
Sometime later, walking along a familiar route, I heard from behind. “Hi there, can you remember me?” She continued excitedly, “Dan is settling at play-group, and I’ve experienced something strange since attending a course at that building .” She explained how she was never into this God-talk or inclined to Spirituality. “Her only motives were to find a man and to demolish the free food, tea/ coffees advertised. To my surprise, she added, “ The group talks, videos, discussions outlining pieces of evidence of Jesus’ existence, made me curious, and I completed the course. How weird is that? It was like a bulb switched on, and I believe I’m seeing life with a new lens.” This lady’s experience was not instantaneous but gradual as she attended more sessions. She mentioned how she didn’t want to lose this ray of hope she felt connected to. It made her feel light inside “, she said, “you should try it.
Second Example:
Edgar’s spiritual journey began after hearing, “it is cancerous. ” He said, “My whole world fell through – like cascading to a bottomless pit, all hope disappeared. Rapidly, my positive outlook eroded. I was always independent and now, relying on others for survival made me heave. I contemplated facing another day, battled with my thoughts, and thought about ending it. Rage and anger haunted me, so I bellowed in desperation, God, if you exist, show up now before I end my life. I hastily gathered all my medications and sat down with a cup of tea.
Suddenly, at 9 pm, the doorbell rang. Startled, I kept silent. It rang again. The third chimes aroused more anger; I flung the door open to see the frail old lady from next door standing apologetically for the late visit. But she explained how she had an urge to check on me now. I invited her in, chatted over the tea, and she left. I immediately knew I was not alone for the first time that night alone. I heard no audible voice, yet I was assured of a higher-being embracing me with inexpressible warmth – deep, deep, inside, and I knew all would be well.
The next day, I was so thankful for life and purpose. My prognosis hadn’t changed, but I’m feeling this new connection enables me to face the weeks of tests, treatments, and appointments with renewed vitality. I’m very active now in the support group and community. My desperate prayer was the powerful tool putting my life together; I use it in every problematic situation along my spiritual journey.
Describing My Spiritual Journey
My spiritual journey started a year after being happily married. I reflected on my accomplishments and was overwhelmed having; a career, home, car, healthy child, supportive relatives, loving and ambitious husband. As young couples, we lacked nothing materially. Yet, I felt empty after our nights of dining, partying, clubbing, holidays, socializing. Surely there was more to life than this?
Yes, indeed, there’s more to life than this. I was determined from this point to search for life’s purpose, perhaps the missing link. To accomplish this, for me, I spent many days meditating.
Days of silence followed with no answers, so I continued to meditate. It brought me an unnatural abundance of peace. From this place of calmness, I received my inspiration, wisdom, and knowledge for the decisions or steps that I later took in life. I learned that if I’m calm, my household stays calm. It was working, I felt at peace- so I continued my pursuit of Spirituality.
Another step I took was to journal. I recorded any small things and extraordinary events happening around me. Journaling allowed me to review my day/life and gratitude for specific situations.
Journaling also leaves a legacy that remains as encouragement for others.
There’s a gentle nudge I’ve grown accustomed to in my spirit. My spirit is always trying to do the right things. Often my pendulum swings to wrongness, and peace would disappear. Now I know that a quick apologetic prayer and trying to do the right thing reconnect me. I obeyed nudges to read spiritual resources, which has a cleansing effect inside.
Reading spiritual and biblical books has helped me filter through life’s challenges and distractions. My spiritual journey has assisted me in maintaining loving relationships with various ethnicities, my families, and friends.
I listen to motivational talks, teachings, audiobooks, tapes, CDs for enlightenment and growth. First thing in the morning, I pray daily in a quiet place. It’s the most beneficial experience I can have alone, drawing from within. I sing too. Not like Diana Ross or Carrie Underwood, who cares?. Sing while you have a voice-just make a ‘joyful sound. It’ll soothe your soul and lift your spirit to a higher place.
How To Start Your Spiritual Journey
When starting your spiritual journey, remember it will not be without problems. The more hurdles you face, the higher you leap, and your integrity will be greater.
Don’t just wait for an audible voice – like Samuel (1 Samuel: 3 v 3-21), or when life’s epiphanies and blackest instances such as repossession, relationship failures, sicknesses, tragic accidents, grief, etc.; forces you. Take your first step willingly.
Clar Up Your Mind
Discipline your mind to relinquish old fables and preconceived ideas. Know your beliefs and values, but make room for more light to penetrate. This open-mindedness prepares you to accept new truths and advance your spiritual growth.
Listen To Your Body
Get comfortable and relax even if you have to disappear to the bathroom. Be calm. Read some suggestions on how to stay calm and meditate. Through stillness and calmness, I believe you gain the capacity to grasp the ‘still small voice’ beckoning you towards this extraordinary and fulfilling journey.
Maintenance
Maintenance is crucial to completing your spiritual journey. Most people feed their bodies 3-4 times a day, but tragically, they give little or no thought towards providing their soul, mind, or spirit the nutrition it needs to grow. Once your heart has been awakened, alerted, or summoned to a higher power than yourself, it’s advisable to listen to the inner voice; whether to meditate, pray, read. Whatever works for you, do something to nourish your spirit.
Aloneness
You came into the world alone, unless you’re twins. Your spiritual journey is an independent one. You will exit this life alone too. Be like the eagle who flies alone at a high altitude, with clear vision. You will soar extraordinarily higher as you start this spiritual journey.
